Salvete amici! Nomen mihi est Alan Abbe and this year I am very excited to teach Latin I, Latin 4 AP, and World History! The Latin classes will focus on the fundamentals of Latin grammar throughout the year and study them in the context of 1st century BC and AD Roman culture. By the time we finish, we will have read many selections from authentic Latin authors and texts. In addition, we will apply the skills we have learned in our class to other classes, use Latin to make connections with other areas of our lives, and develop a life-long appreciation of the Latin language and civilization.
Latin I follows the family of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus from Pompeii to Britannia and finally to Egypt. We learn basic Latin grammar and reading skills in the target language. We also take a look at Roman history and culture, with a little mythology thrown in as well!
Latin 4 AP is a fast-paced college level course studying Julius Caesar's De Bello Gallico - considered by many to be among the greatest works of Latin prose- and Vergil's Aeneid - the greatest of epic poems in Latin. In this class, we will learn how to analyze passages, write literal translations, and explore Roman culture, history, and mythology. By the end of Latin 4, students can expect to read Latin at an advanced low to advanced mid proficiency!
World History is an exploration of 200,000 years of human history! By looking at the various ways in which cultures and civilizations have developed, and by examining the influences of individuals and groups, we will gain a greater appreciation of why the modern world is as it is.
